Enterprise Management Incentives (EMI)
EMI has now been with us for over 10 years, yet it remains the most attractive of all share schemes for owner managed limited companies.
It has significant tax advantages, which have been enhanced over the years.
It is designed to help small and medium sized companies attract, retain and reward employees.
Wilson Partners have set up EMI schemes with businesses in London and across the South of England.
EMI Features
Each employee may hold options over shares up to a maximum of £250,000 at any one time.
The value of the shares is measured at the time of the option grant. The total market value of shares over which unexercised options exist may not exceed £3 million. There is no limit on the number of employees who may participate. The Company is free to decide which employees are to be granted options, however, the following limiting conditions apply:
- The employee must not have control of more than 30% of the company’s share capital
- The employee must work at least 25 hours per week (or 75% of their “working time”) for the company.
