A new Prime Minister usually brings a wave of speculation and yesterday was no different.

One of the first announcements from the new Government was the removal of VAT on household electricity bills from October as part of its initial cost of living package. It’s an early indication of the direction of travel, but it’s unlikely to be the last significant fiscal announcement businesses will see over the coming months but it is a nod to the style of government we can expect.

The new PM has made economic growth, regional investment, devolution and improving living standards central to the government’s agenda, while also stressing the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline. Those ambitions are significant, but how they will be funded and what that means for businesses remains to be seen – the Autumn Budget will probably be the first real opportunity to understand how those priorities translate into tax policy.

Until then, business owners should be cautious about reacting to headlines, but what they can do is make sure their business is well positioned, whatever changes come.

That means asking questions such as:

  • Are we making full use of the reliefs available today?
  • Is our business structured efficiently?
  • Could changes to tax policy alter our investment, remuneration or growth plans?
  • Are we on top of the numbers with visibility over the management information needed to respond quickly when the rules change?

Political change inevitably creates uncertainty, but as always, it can also create opportunity.

Businesses with good financial visibility, robust reporting and proactive advice are invariably the ones best placed to adapt. They don’t wait for the Budget before thinking about tax or strategy, they prepare in advance so they can move decisively when the picture becomes clearer.

At Wilson Partners, we’ll be following developments closely in the run-up to the next Budget.

Rather than adding to the speculation, we’ll focus on what has actually changed, what it means in practice, and the actions businesses should consider taking.

Because good decisions aren’t made on political headlines, they’re made with clear information, careful planning and commercially grounded advice.
