It’s easy to assume profit equals progress. But even profitable businesses fail – because they run out of cash, that’s why planning and forecasting is so important to success. Planning and forecasting is also vital for start-ups when it comes to investor tax reliefs such as SEIS and EIS. You’ll need to ensure you’re meeting key requirements such as “growth and development” and the “risk to capital” condition in order to qualify.

At Wilson Partners, we help founders build a strategy that keep them in control, confident, and investor ready.

Why forecasting matters

You can’t steer what you can’t see. A simple cashflow forecast helps you:

  • Know your runway, and when funding will be needed
  • Avoid over-hiring or over-spending
  • Plan for tax and payroll
  • Show investors you’re in control
  • Make decisions with confidence

We’ve helped clients prepare to raise investment, apply for grants, and navigate tricky transitions – all because they had clear numbers and a strong plan.

Where to start

You don’t need a complex model. Just start with:

  • Revenue – What’s in the pipeline? When do you anticipate the first sales? Any signed contracts or real leads?
  • Timing – When will money land? Are there payment delays or staged invoices?
  • Costs – Monthly outgoings, plus one-offs like software, kit or marketing

A 12-month rolling forecast is usually enough to start – and tools like Xero or Float make this quick to update, but you will need a 3 year business plan for S/EIS applications.

How Wilson Partners can help

We can work with you to build your first forecast – and evolve it as you grow. That includes:

  • Custom cashflow templates
  • Scenario planning
  • Financial modelling
  • Investor-ready reporting

We’ll help you stress-test assumptions and plan for growth, investment, or bumps in the road.

Forecasting isn’t optional anymore

If you want to build a business that’s scalable and fundable – you need to plan.

At Wilson Partners, we give founders the insight to make better decisions, and the support to stick to them
